Awake

AwakeAwake: The Life of Yogananda documents the life of Paramahansa Yogananda, a yogi that came to the U.S in 1920.  Yogananda’s reason for traveling to the west was to bring the spiritual teachings, mindfulness training, and the meditation of his lineage and the ancient yogic scriptures.

Yogananda passed away in 1952 and left behind Self-Realization Fellowship where he poured his life’s work and teachings into.  The documentary interviews monks in the various ashrams (yogic monasteries) that were alive during the life of Yogananda, disciples who devoutly follow his path today, and current spiritual teachers around the world,

Yogananda coming to the U.S. in 1920 made some waves when he gave his first lecture in Boston, MA.  Many people simply went to hear a foreign swami talk about the spiritual teachings of the east more out of fascination than to hear his message  However, the word began to spread and Yogananda wound up giving hundreds of lectures about the science behind spirituality that offered a new view into the world of spirituality.

Yogananda is one of the original yogis credited with bringing yoga to the west.  However, the teachings that Yogananda left behind are not focused on the asanas (stretching postures) but rather the eight-fold path of yoga with the goal of self-realization.  Yogananda established ashrams and his spiritual headquarters in Southern California that are still very active today.  Thousands of people are still benefitting from the life of Yogananda and the spiritual teachings he left behind.

If you are interested in learning about a unique way of life and a fascinating story of trials, tribulations, and eventual worldwide success that an Indian swami faced in the early to mid 1900’s, watch this documentary.  You may also want to check out Yogananda’s Autobiography of a Yogi (link to book review here).
